It’s Vote for Table Mountain Thursday and we have arguably the new voices of Africa as ambassadors for Table Mountain to become one of the New7Wonders of Nature.
Acclaimed South African band Freshlyground have come a long way from their humble roots. And with an MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act, a Channel O Music Video Award, four albums, countless world tours, and four South African Music Awards under their belt they are still celebrating local culture.

Freshlyground gained worldwide acclaim when they performed the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem alongside Colombian sensation Shakira at the soccer showpiece’s opening ceremony. They followed that achievement by collaborating with Goldfish on this year’s Springboks Rugby World Cup anthem and now, showing that they truly have green and gold running through their veins, they have lent their soulful and striking voices to the campaign to have Table Mountain named as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.
Freshlyground blend indigenous African sounds with urban beats, maskandi riffs, and afro-pop, and it was this sound that accompanied their trip up Table Mountain as part of a “taxijam” session.
Taxijam.tv describes itself as “an internet mixed-tape” website which showcases local talent performing in taxis and mini-buses around the city.
“We shoot our own videos here in our hometown … [and] we film some of the best home-grown or visiting talent in our traditional minicab taxis, driving around somewhere.”
Taxijam.tv explains how this special cable car collaboration with Freshlyground came about:“A random meeting about a month ago with the CEO of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway at a Cape Town World Design dinner was the genesis of this project … We have been working within the confines of our traditional taxis for almost three years now, and we thought that the same concept would translate quite nicely into one of the most iconic vehicles in Cape Town – the cable car!”
