Since childhood, radio and television presenter Kia Johnson has been passionate about the environment, and now she is a proud ambassador of Table Mountain in the Vote for Table Mountain campaign.
She chose to get involved because she feels saddened by the "state of affairs" that the planet is in right now.
“What better way to open people’s eyes than to draw their attention to such an amazing campaign?” she says.
Campaign Manager for Vote for Table Mountain and well-known voice-over artist Fiona Furey spoke to her about the endangered species on the Mountain and that it's part of the Cape Floral Region, a World Heritage Site, she got instantly hooked.
“I feel that by putting Table Mountain on the world map as one of the New7Wonders of Nature, we will start educating those around us about the beauty of our breathtaking surroundings and further ensure that people will want to play their part in protecting the environment.”
Asked about her most memorable moment on Table Mountain, Kia says it was going up it in the cable car.
“When I was a child, my parents would hike every Sunday and Table Mountain was one of their favourite trails. After hiking we would sometimes take a ride in the cable car. Being with my family and experiencing this stunning scenery was absolutely super.”
Johnson has been working as a radio presenter for seven years and as a TV presenter and researcher for less than four. She currently presents one of the newest and fastest growing morning shows, Expresso, on SABC 3 and says she will use this platform to encourage viewers to SMS and go to the Vote for Table Mountain website.
Kia also has a blog on the Expresso website where she further encourages everyone to get involved.
Find her on Facebook on her Kia Johnson profile page, her Kia Johnson fan page and Twitter account.
The New7Wonders of Nature will be declared in November 2011.
